Background: For 36 years, NACA has offered health and human services to the Flagstaff community. Incorporated in 1971 to address the growing need for alcohol abuse prevention services among urban Native Americans, NACA now provides a wide array of services. These include: career counseling/job training (WIA); diabetes education and case-management; economic development; emergency needs and supportive services; mental health counseling; primary health care; substance abuse education and prevention for youth (Pathways); substance abuse intervention/treatment for adults; tobacco education/cessation; and, a vendor project that assists Native American artisans in economic development ventures. Most of the programs are either free-of-charge or are offered at a low cost to clients. Thousands of individuals and their families receive services from NACA each year.
NACA employs 30 staff members, most of whom are Native American. A volunteer board of directors, the majority of which are also Native American, governs agency operations. These individuals are dedicated to providing the best possible services to Native Americans and others at-risk in the Flagstaff community.
Community Impact: NACA works to improve the health, well being and economic circumstances of urban Native Americans, their families and others in need. For many Native Americans who are making the transition from reservation life to an urban setting, NACA serves as a vital service link and cultural resource.
Through the provision of varied services to families and their children, NACA improves the overall health and well being of the Flagstaff community. The families receive information, education, medical care and other needed services that assist them in leading healthier lifestyles and in achieving greater economic independence. By ensuring that services are provided in a culturally appropriate manner, NACA also works to preserve Native American traditions, culture and language.
NACA is proud of its long service record in Flagstaff and of the thousands of families assisted through its health and human services. Dedicated to improving the lives of urban Native Americans, NACA is a willing community partner, cultural resource and advocate for individuals and families in need. In countless ways, NACA has positively impacted the Flagstaff community and will continue to do so.
