Substance Abuse Program
Back to Programs & Services

The mission of the NACA Substance Abuse Program (SAP) is to promote living a sober lifestyle based on the traditional Native American philosophy of “Walking in Beauty and Harmony”.

SAP is celebrating over 30 years of service to the Flagstaff community in 2005. It is licensed through the Arizona Department of Health Services and fulfills court requirements for DUI education. The program provides counseling and education to individuals and families with substance abuse or dependency problems.

Services offered include:

Assessment: All clients are first interviewed and evaluated on an individual basis. The initial assessment determines the level of care and ideal program for that person. Clients are charged a $40.00 fee for assessment.

Outpatient services: Education/counseling groups are held twice weekly. The comprehensive 36 hour curriculum  includes topics such as the disease concept of alcoholism and drug addiction, cultural stressors, family dynamics, co-dependency, grief, health education, use of traditional beliefs and practices in healing, and relapse prevention.

DUI classes: Clients who have been convicted of Driving Under the Influence (DUI) can fulfill their court-ordered education requirements in two full day sessions (16 hours), held twice a month on Saturdays'. Participants are charged:
DUI education (16 hours) $60 for Native Americans/$120 for non-Natives
DUI / Substance abuse counseling $100 for Native Americans/$200 for non-Natives
     Driver's license reinstatement $80.00

Aftercare/Follow-up Services: Follow-up services are available for those individuals who have completed a primary treatment program and who wish to participate in continuing care. Aftercare groups meet on a weekly basis.

Referrals: Referrals are made for inpatient treatment or to other health professionals or agencies as needed. Counselors assist clients with placement in an inpatient treatment program through collaboration with the Indian Health Service and the Navajo Nation.

Community Outreach:  The NACA SAP counselors work with a variety of agencies such as the Flagstaff Unified School District, the Kinlani Dormitory, the Juvenile Courts, Northern Arizona University and the Navajo Nation. Presentations on substance abuse topics are available free of charge for any interested community organization.

The goals of the program is to assist those seeking
help in maintaining a clean and sober lifestyle!
