Tobacco Education Program
Back to Programs & Services

The mission of the NACA Tobacco Education Program (TEP) is to improve the quality of life for urban Native Americans through education, prevention, reduction and cessation of commercial tobacco products, in addition to increasing the awareness of ceremonial tobacco use.

The NACA Tobacco Education Program is contracted through the Inter-Tribal Council of Arizona (ITCA) to provide tobacco education and prevention services. A strong focus of the services is on school-based interventions. More than 3 million American teenagers currently smoke, and more than 1 million use spit tobacco. The average age for first tobacco use is now 11-15years of age (CDC, 1994).

TEP activities include: individual education, group education to local schools or other agencies as requested, peer education, cessation referrals, data collection, and community outreach.

The program emphasizes the differences between the addictive patterns of commercial tobacco use, and the traditional use of tobacco for religious and medicinal purposes. Commercial tobacco contains over 3,000 chemicals including nicotine, acetone, cyanide, and formaldehyde among many others.

For more information about the NACA TEP Program, contact Shirley Watkins, Tobacco Education Program Coordinator at swatkins@nacainc.org or (928) 526-2968.
